| Description: | The distinctive pale greenish-grey sandstones from the Devonian Raglan Mudstone Formation were once extensively quarried for local buildings in the village. St. Peter's is a late medieval church and is a fine example of the use of this local sandstone. Withington Church is one of several buildings constructed from sandstone quarried around the village. The sandstone is a particularly coarse-grained and massive bed in the Raglan Mudstone (Lower Old Red Sandstone) which is not found elsewhere in the area. The Lower Old Red Sandstone succession includes many sandstone beds which were once used throughout Herefordshire for local building. The sandstones range from greenish grey to red in colour. The pale-coloured Withington Stone is a particularly attractive and durable building stone but like many of the others is no longer quarried. |
