Description: | Sand-pit on W. side of A46 road, Shurdington, Gloucester. Section in Cheltenham Sands, Shurdington, Gloucester. A face about 4 m. high shows quartzose sands with well-developed horizontal lamination and some small-scale cross-bedding. Towards the top is a seam of gravel composed mainly of oolitic limestone pebbles. The topmost 1 m. or so consists of unbedded decalcified sand, with a ferruginous band at its base probably formed as a 'pan' by downward percolation of iron-bearing solutions. |
