| Description: | This building is typical of many of the smaller vernacular houses of this area of Sussex. Small blocks of local ferruginous sandstone from the Lower Cretaceous succession, together with some flint nodules, make up most of the wall fabric. The building is roofed in thin Welsh slates not the local Horsham Stone slates. This building, Erskine Nursery at Hurstpierpoint is constructed principally of dark brown ferruginous sandstone (carstone) from the Lower Cretaceous Folkestone Beds. The top few courses of the gable wall and much of the lean-to wall are built of undressed flint nodules. As used in this area, the term carstone is a descriptive one used to distinguish the locally ferruginous sandstone beds found in the Lower Greensand Group It does not correlate directly with the Carstone Formation as defined in East Anglia. |
