Description: Burlton Court Gravel Pit, Burghill, Hereford. Contact of Welsh Till on Portway Gravel in detail. This is a detail of the north-east face of the pit. The contact of the two drift deposits is at the level of the hammer head. The lower deposit is the Lower Portway Gravel. It is fine-grained with a silty sand matrix and the clasts are almost entirely Old Red Sandstone cornstones, siltstones and sandstones. The upper deposit is a gravelly till with a preponderence of angular to rounded green Lower Palaeozoic clasts in a clayey silt matrix. Though not too obvious in this photograph the pebbles at the top of the Portway Gravel are commonly frost-fractured and some are arranged with their long axes vertical.
