| Description: | Isle of Rum. Raised beach at Harris. Inverness-shire. A late-glacial storm beach composed of granophyre pebbles overlying layered ultrabasic rocks. The contact of the granophyre and the ultrabasic rocks extends inland from the point on the left. One of the fine shingle ridges of the storm beach, it rises to a little above 30 m. Most of the blocks and pebbles are of granophyre probably derived from talus which formerly covered the 'preglacial' raised marine platform to the north-west. The contact between the Western Granite granophyre and the Western Layered Intrusion peridotites is vertical to steeply outward-dipping, inland the contact is largely obscured by drift. |
