Caption: Norwich Castle, Norfolk.
Description: The Norman Keep shown here is sited on Norwich Crag which forms a hill in a meander of the River Wensum. The keep was originally constructed of Caen Stone, a Middle Jurassic limestone imported from Normandy, but has been since refaced in Bath Stone. The walls of Norwich Castle keep shown in this image were refaced with Middle Jurassic Bath limestones in the late 19th century. The original Caen Stone had weathered so badly that its wholesale replacement was deemed necessary to conserve th building. The lack of suitable freestones in Norfolk for prestigious buildings like the Norman castle at Norwich, required the importation of more suitable freestones. Limestone from the Normandy quarries at Caen were easy to import by sea and are commonly seen in many Norman buildings in the south east of England. By the 13th century however, limestones from the Lincolnshire Limestone Formation began to replace them in Norwich.
