Description: | Camas Sgiotaig, Isle of Eigg. Inverness-shire. The sea cliff is of concretionary sandstone of the Valtos Sandstone Formation (Jurassic); the scarp in background is of Palaeogene (Tertiary) lava of the Eigg Lava Formation. The famous 'singing sand' of Camas Sgiotaig, a pure white sand derived from the Valtos Sandstone Formation. There is a postglacial raised beach behind the sand with a late-glacial beach flat above the fossil cliff-line. Till is sparsely distributed or absent over much of the island except here at Camas Sgiotaig where hard grey till overlies the Valtos Sandstone Formation, which is in turn overlain by clayey till with boulders and by raised beach gravels. |
