The circular 'Spindle' is formed of xenolithic, columnar-jointed basanite and the stack behind it (the 'Rock') is formed of basanitic breccia. The stack and the cliffs behind are made of bedded tuff and agglomerate. Similar material below the 'Spindle' shows collapse structures.
