Description: | Old Man of Hoy, north-west coast of Hoy. Orkney. A 137 m. sea stack composed of red sandstone of Upper Old Red Sandstone age. In former times the Old Man of Hoy had another leg which took the form of an arched buttress against the eastern side. According to drawings and paintings the point of attachment was a third of the way up the present stack, now marked by a much less eroded portion. The second limb appears to have fallen early last century and all that remains is the heap of debris between the east side of the stack and the foot of the adjoining cliff as seen in the photograph. |
