Description: | Wotton Bros. Quarries, Quartzite Quarry, near Packhorse Bridge, Wick, near Bristol. Looking ESE. Quartzitic Sandstone Group (Namurian). The rocks are strongly folded and are cut by shear planes which cut the sandstone bands and extend into the adjacent mudstone. The prominent sandstone band on the right-hand side of the picture has been quarried in the past and the natural surface feature has therefore been destroyed. The quartzitic sandstone was formerly crushed for use as a surface dressing or 'carpet' on highways. |
