Description: | The Hoy Sandstone is a series of red and yellow sandstones with thin marly partings and has a thickness of at least 3,500 feet. The basalt lava flow is over 200 feet thick but rapidly thins out. The thickest part of the lower two-thirds of the flow is made up of rough vertical columns that pass up into a purple slaggy top. Cliffs formed of Hoy Sandstone (Upper Old Red Sandstone) on top, columnar Hoy Basalt in the middle part of the cliff and basic tuff at base. The pale cliff in the middle distance (close to croft house) is Lower Eday Sandstone. |
