| Description: | Wanlockhead village. Dumfries. View looking down the Wanlock valley. Dumps of old lead mines in middle distance. Part of the same lead-mining district as Leadhills. The lead veins are said to have been discovered (more probably rediscovered) by Cornelius Hardskins (a German) during the minority of James IV. They were opened up by James Stampfield in 1680. Almost all the veins of the district carry galena as the principal valuable mineral. Copper and zinc-blende can also occur in the veins and there is widespread alluvial gold. The gold-bearing quartz veins from which the gold is derived have never been found. |
