Description: | Pevensey Castle, Pevensey, (outer wall, SW corner). Looking E. Pevensey Castle. The outer wall of the castle is of Roman age, and constructed of various stones, including Upper Greensand freestone from Eastbourne, Tunbridge Wells sandstone from Chilley, Wadhurst clay-ironstone nodules from the neighbouring beach, and flint cobbles from the same source. At intervals between the courses of stone there are bondings of thin brick or tile, well seen to the right of the gateway. Modern walls of flint beach-cobbles on left and right of view. |
