Description: | The 'Stag Rock' and High Down Cliffs, from E. side of Freshwater Bay. Looking SSW. The Stag Rock. A sea-stack composed of nodular chalk in the Upper Chalk Zone of Micraster cortestudinarium, capped by a small outlier of Pleistocene 'head'. The landward face of the stack coincides with a bedding plane. The strike of the chalk is shown by the parallel reefs visible through the water. The western side of Freshwater Bay and High Down in background. Ref: 'A short account of the geology of the Isle of Wight', p.184. |
