Description: | Cliff about 300 yd. W. of Hanover Point, Compton Bay. Looking NW. Valley gravel and Wealden Beds, near Compton Grange Chine. Pleistocene brickearth and gravel overlying clay and sandstone of Wealden Marls. The sandstone, in lower part of main cliff, exhibits current-bedding of aeolian type. Variegated clay, underlying the sandstone on right. In background, part of Compton Grange (or Shippard's) Chine is seen above the white (sandstone) bluff. The cliff on left is partly in Wealden Shales capped by brickearth. Ref: 'A short account of the geology of the Isle of Wight', pp.11, 12, 182. |
