Description: | The Longstone, about 1/4 m. N. of Mottistone. Looking NW. The Longstone, near Mottistone. Megaliths of dark red-brown iron-sandstone, resembling that of Ferruginous Sands of Lower Greensand in the vicinity. The upright block is about 13 ft. in height, and 6 ft. wide: the prostrate block is about 9 ft. in length. The stones are on the Sandrock Beds, exposed close by, in a ravine, the head of which appears in the foreground of the view. Ref. 'A short account of the geology of the Isle of Wight', p.42. |
