Description: | Albert Dock Extension, towards western end. North Woolich. Looking E. General view of the Great Trench, showing the uneven base of the main lignite or peat bed (dark) resting on pale mud. The bottom of the trench just touches the Thames Ballast, at most points. The tree trunks are of the 'harder' or not soft and sodden type, and have been dug out of the various portions of the silt, clays and lignite beds in which they lie. |
