Description: | Hailes Quarry, Slateford. Edinburgh. Quarry in Hailes Sandstone (Calciferous Sandstone Series). The south end of the quarry showing the quarry face. Note how the beds become thicker towards the base of the face. A crane is clearly seen with its wire rope stays. The tunnel to the left goes under the Union Canal to another part of the quarry. The Calciferous Sandstone Series is Lower Carboniferous in age. Craigleith Quarry was said to have been in operation for over 300 years in 1892. It is now totally filled in. |
