| Description: | Processing of Scottish mica. Pitlochry Depot (January 1945). Perthshire. Rough splitting of dressed 'books' by two female workers at the Sorting Factory. Preparation of mica for the market was a comparatively simple but skilled operation and carried out entirely by hand with the aid of a splitting knife. Note the heavy gauntlets worn to protect the hands. Any adhering rock is removed then the 'books' are split into plates one-eighth of an inch or less in thickness using a special splitting knife. Processing of mica involved three stages, 1. rough cobbing, 2. splitting, 3. trimming. It does not undergo any other process of treatment or concentration before it is ready for use. |
