| Description: | Cowglen, near Thornliebank, 3 miles south-west of Glasgow. Renfrewshire. Shallow stoop and room workings in Main or Rough Coal, exposed during excavations at New Fever Hospital site. Near view: shows the ironstone rib (white) on top of pillars. The ironstone rib formed a strong natural roof to the seam and it was due to its presence that the workings were able to be carried so near the surface. Drift deposits above. The view also looks into some of the old galleries. The drift deposits at the hospital site were recorded in upward succession as boulder clay; laminated clays; shelly in parts; sands and gravels; sub-soil; soil. |
