| Description: | Black Moss, 2.4 km. north of Dinnet Station. Aberdeenshire.The kieselguhr (diatomite) works. Peat moss overlying diatomaceous earth ('kieselguhr'). The working face of the peat is seen behind with exposure of kieselguhr on extreme right. A bogie on a light railway is seen in the foreground. Diatomite is a sediment composed of the fossil remains of diatoms, unicellular green algae with microscopic siliceous tests (skeletal remains). On the death of the algae the tests become hollow spheres which when packed together become a light porous material with high absorbency. Kieselghur is a synonym for diatomite. |
