Description: | Label name: Red Ogwell, Devon. Alternative name: Red Ogwell. Specimen description: Dark red-brown with white-grey veins and patches. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 10 RED OGWELL (dark). Ogwell Quarries, near Newton Abbot, Devonshire. This specimen is an example of limestone from the outcrop of Devonian rocks near Newton Abbot, which furnishes a handsome marble when the stone is polished. It is brownish red in colour, variegated with grey and white veins and markings. The fossils present are very indefinite, but many of the markings strongly suggest Alveolites. There are two varieties of this marble, distinguished among marble workers as Dark and Light Red Ogwell. This specimen is an example of the former. The quarries are situated about two miles south-west of Newton Abbot. |
