Caption: | Iceland, Blaa Jonid (Blue Lagoon). |
Description: | Blue Lagoon near Grindavik stands upon the spreading centre rift in the southwest of the island. Here post glacial (both pre and post 1100 years), basic and intermediate lavas form a wide plain surrounding upper Pleistocene volcanic cones made up of basic and intermediate hyalocatitic and pillow lavas. In general the individual post glacial flows show a vesicular basalt core with a superficial surface unit. In places this klinker material is reincorporated into the flow as they move. |
