Caption: | Index Limestone. 300 yards south of High Polquhirter, 1 mile south-east of New Cumnock. Ayr. |
Description: | Dull, brownish-grey, fine-grained dolomite. Composed of granular dolomite, about 0.1 mm grain which is turbid with amorphous dust and speckled with opaque brown material, perhaps limonite. The dolomite is ankeritic with omega = 1.690. The section shows a number of fragmentary fossils which have been recrystallized and filled in with coarse carbonate. Staining by the silver nitrate-potassium chromate method shows that this carbonate as well as coarse material in cracks is dolomite, calcite being present only as specks distributed abundantly in and throughout the dolomite of the matrix. A small quantity of bitumen is present, mainly along stylolitic films, and also a little pyrite. Dolomite, varigrained, xoophasmic. SL0095. Britrocks S34561. Magnification x40. Light XPL. |
