Caption: Specimen of sandstone from Locharbriggs Quarry, Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
Description: The sample is a uniform quartz-rich sandstone with a strong red colour. The specimen is of Permian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5841. Locharbriggs Sandstone is one of the Permian New Red Sandstones. It is a medium-grained stone with a dull red colour. The Locharbriggs Sandstone has been continuously worked since the 1890s, but probably has a history of quarrying at this site going back to about 1700. There are known to be good reserves of stone, suggesting that quarrying could continue for many years to come. The stone has been used extensively for many building applications. Amongst many other uses in Scotland it can be seen in the People's Palace on Glasgow Green (1898) and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (c. 1900).
