Caption: | Specimen of metamorphosed dolerite from Kilmartin Quarry, Argyllshire, Scotland |
Description: | The sample is a polished slab of metamorphosed diorite which has been used for decorative cladding on a building. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5695. The rock is a basic igneous intrusion such as a sill or dyke which has undergone deformation and metamorphism. Such rocks are common within the Dalradian Supergroup of Scotland, and are known as metabasic rocks or metabasites. They have a primary basic igneous composition, dominated by iron and magnesium minerals and plagioclase feldspar, with very little (if any) primary quartz content. Metabasic rocks commonly contain a mineral assemblage that has formed as a result of metamorphism, any primary igneous minerals being largely altered and/or replaced. At low grades of metamorphism they are dominated by chlorite and epidote, whilst at higher grades they often contain amphibole. |
