Caption: | Specimen of roofing slate from Grange Fell Quarries, Keswick, Cumberland, England |
Description: | Sample of 'Best Green Slate' showing the typical grey-green colour of the Cumberland slates. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5790. The specimen shows faint banding across part of the cleavage surface. This represents the original sedimentary bedding, with thin plaler bands representing 'impure' slightly coarser-grained silty beds. The Gate Cragg slate quarry in Borrowdale was operated by the Grange Fells Quarry Co. in the 1920s and 30s. Some of this slate may have been exported into Scotland at this time, and this particular sample was probably obtained by the Geological Survey of Scotland in the 1930s. Specimen size: 23x14cm. |
