| Description: | Medium-grained sandstone with sawn and polished face showing speckled grainy appearance. This specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number E16892. The rock is composed of sand-size grains of quartz (grey colour) and feldspar (variable cream or buff colour). The colour of feldspar as a rock is often variable, commonly depending on the amount of alteration or weathering. Stancliffe Quarry has been operating for at least a hundred years. Stone from the quarry has been used very widely, for example refacing Manchester Cathedral in 1865, extension to Liverpool Town Hall 1899. It has been used for many years for restoration work in Edinburgh's New Town, for example Gayfield Place, Great Stuart Street and Hamilton Place. Size of specimen: 3x3x3 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 5Y7/1, pale yellowish grey. |
