Caption: | Rock specimen of sandstone from Locharbriggs Quarry near Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Region, Scotland. |
Description: | The sandstone has a uniform texture, and distinctive speckled appearance caused by the weathering of feldspars to a pale cream colour. This specimen is of Permian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S13728. The distinctive red sandstone from Locharbriggs is from the New Red Sandstone of Permian age. The stone has been extensively used around the Dumfries area, and once the railways became established it was transported to Glasgow, Paisley, Stirling, Hull, Dundee, Edinburgh and beyond. Sandstone from Locharbriggs was used to construct the exterior of the Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum at Kelvingrove. The building was constructed in 1901, designed by the architects John Simpson and Milner Allen in a complex style sometimes termed 'Hispanic Baroque' giving a dramatic impression, heightened by the vivid red sandstone. It forms one of Glasgow's most significant landmarks. Size of specimen: 6x6x4 cm.. |
