Caption: Rock specimen of sandstone from Devilla Forest, Alloa, in Bathmoor Plantation, 5 miles east-south-east of Alloa, Fife Region, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a fine-grained, quartz-rich sandstone, with a relatively 'pure' composition. Uniform freestone with no obvious bedding. This specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC3439. The rock is relatively friable, indicating that the natural matrix cement that binds the sand grains together is weak or poorly developed. The stone is very uniform with no obvious sedimentary bedding structures. Building stones which are uniform and have large bed-heights are often called 'freestones', which means that they can be worked, carved or tooled with less chance of the rock splitting along the bedding planes. This sample was collected by the Geological Survey in 1973. Size of specimen: 14x8x6 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 10YR8/2, very pale orange.
