Description: | The sample is strongly bedded with parallel laminations. This specimen is of Permian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5859. The rock is dominated by quartz grains, but has a white speckled appearance caused by the presence of grains of white feldspar. Locharbriggs stone was used in Edinburgh for the Caledonian Hotel, built in 1899-1903. It was also used for the original Edinburgh Art College (1906-10), and when a new extension was built in 1972, the same material was still available. Size of specimen: 15x13x6 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 10R5/6, reddish orange. |
