Caption: | Rock specimen of sandstone from Catcastle Quarry, Lartington, Barnard Castle, Durham, England. |
Description: | The sample is a medium to coarse-grained sandstone with variable grain size and occasional coarse gritty quartz grains. This specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5874. The distinctive planar bedding surfaces and speckled appearance are caused by concentrations of darker iron rich minerals. Due to the absence of local sources of sandstone, Catcastle was selected for the restoration of the Stirling Castle Great Hall (completed in 2000). It has also been used recently for the new Edinburgh Sheriff Court House in Chambers Street, Edinburgh (1997). Size of specimen: 10x10x2 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 10YR7/2, very pale yellow brown. |
