| Description: | Time lapse (5 minutes) evening photograph of the growing andesitic lava dome in December 1996, viewed from the north-east. The incandescence could not usually be seen in daylight. The sites of small dome collapses glow incandescently in the dark, the avalanches of hot lava blocks (pyroclastic flows) glow red as they fall down the sides of the lava dome. In December 1996, the lava dome was growing quite quickly at a rate of about 3 cubic metres per second. By December 1997, the growth rate was 10 cubic metres per second, in other words enough lava to fill a minibus was produced every second. The ongoing eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano has devastated much of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. The eruption of the lava dome-building volcano began in 1995 and volcanic hazards have included pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic surges, vulcanian explosions, lateral blasts, ash clouds and lahars. |
