Description: Two specimens of muscovite mica cut, trimmed and graded as 'No. 5', 'stained' from the Loch Nevis Mica Prospect, Knoydart, Invernessshire and processed at the Pitlochry Sorting Factory. Grade No. 5 refers to a surface area of 3-6 square inches. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7744. 'Fair stained' is the fourth best category for clarity in a scale consisting of seven steps. This category was one of the main strategic categories heavily in demand for a range of electrical industry uses. Muscovite is the commonest member of the mica group and is found in crystalline rocks throughout the world and also in sedimentary rocks. Under suitable conditions it forms large crystals which can split freely and yield extremely thin, uniform plates.
