Caption: Muscovite mica split, trimmed and graded as 'No. 2', 'slightly stained' from the Loch Nevis Mica Prospect, Knoydart, Invernessshire.
Description: This large specimen of mica is graded as No. 2 slightly stained. The No. 2 refers to a specimen that is 15-24 square inches in area and 'slightly stained' refers to the amount of 'staining' in the specimen, staining being the amount of dark shadowy internal markings. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7742. The specimen is from the Loch Nevis Mica Prospect, Knoydart, located at Sgurr Coire nan Gobhar, about 1.5 miles north-north-west of Kylesknoydart and 300 yards south-east from Loch Coir an Lochan. The mica would have been cut and prepared at the Pitlochry Sorting Factory. Grading of mica was based on type, colour and freedom from staining. There are two main types, 'ruby' and 'green'. The ruby type is subdivided into seven sub-categories depending on the amount of staining. The green type into three categories.
