| Description: | Kieselguhr works at Black Moss, 2.4 km. north of Dinnet Station. Aberdeenshire. Kieselguhr (diatomite) calcining kiln. A close-up photograph of the kiln. Calcination was a process of heating to remove water and any other volatiles. After calcining the diatomite was greater than 87-95% silica, the residue being calcium oxide, aluminium oxide and alkalis (derived from feldspars). Almost all the diatomite went to the Ardeer explosive works in Ayrshire where it was used as a carrier or absorbent for nitroglycerine in dynamite manufacture. (Good diatomite will absorb four times its weight in water.) |
