| Description: | River North Esk at Edzell, Angus. River erosion accelerated by postglacial uplift. A close-up of the river cliff seen in C02138. The sequence in the cliff is Lower Old Red Sandstone marls and thin sandstone bands with overlying boulder clays, the latter are capped by fluvioglacial gravels. The view is at the apex of the meander, taken from the shingle bank on the inside, the cliff shows much fallen debris caused by lateral erosion by the river undercutting the cliff. The blocks are probably further loosened by floods or freeze-thaw action. |
