Description: Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, situated on a promontory on the south side of Linlithgow Loch. Taken from the edge of farm track close to minor road, south of the M9 motorway. Looking south-west. The underlying rocks are basaltic lavas of the Bathgate Hills Volcanic Formation. The loch is probably a kettle hole, located over a former drift-filled channel of the River Avon while the palace itself is located on a landscaped kame. A kame is a landform of glacial deposition, it is a low mound or hummock composed of bedded sand and gravels formed at the margin of a melting glacier.
