Description: | Whiting Ness, 1.6 km. east-north-east of Arbroath, Angus. The Unconformable junction of Upper Old Red Sandstone and the Lower Old Red Sandstone. Lower and Upper Devonian age respectively. A near view of the unconformable junction of Upper Old Red Sandstone conglomerate resting upon the clearly seen uneven surface of sandstone of Lower Old Red Sandstone age. During the Lower Old Red Sandstone times the Dalradian rocks to the north of the Highland Boundary Fault had been elevated into high mountains. Contemporaneous erosion of the mountains was very active due to the lack of vegetation. The deposits represent the dominantly arenaceous non-marine sequence that was laid down as conglomerate fans and extensive alluvial fans with braided rivers. |
