| Description: | Aultderg Burn, 2.5 km. south of Fochabers, Morayshire. Earth pillars of gravel and till overlying Old Red Sandstone conglomerate. Rapid fluvial erosion has cut deep gullies in sand and gravel, which overlies till, which in turn overlies conglomerate. Tussocks preserve certain areas from erosion. When all vegetation has been removed, the pillars are protected from erosion by large cobbles in the gravel. The upper part of the partially detached pillar, right, appears to be formed of gravel, with some very large, rounded boulders, while the steeper-sided part of the pillar is made of till. This is still very stony, but has rather more clay matrix than the upper part of the pillar. |
