| Description: | This imposing frontage of Kedleston Hall built between 1759 and 1765 was constructed principally of coarse-grained Carboniferous Millstone Grit sandstone from quarries at Horsley Castle and Morley Moor. It was built for the Curzon family who had lived in the area since the 12th century. Front view of Kedleston Hall showing the six huge Corinthian columns of cross-bedded sandstone. Four made from single pieces of stone are said to have been quarried from near Horsley Castle - probably Coxbench Quarry in the Rough Rock. The sandstones of the Millstone Grit Group in the Derbyshire Pennine area remain one of our principal sources of building sandstone. Numerous quarries are still in operation in the Matlock area. The sandstones are ubiquitous in building throughout the area. Many older sandstone buildings are also roofed with heavy stone sandstone slates once also quarried locally from the group but now in very short supply. |
