| Description: | Oil wells on lands of Cousland, Midlothian (Anglo-American Oil Co.). Core shed and examination of cores. Records are kept of the depth from which the core was obtained, the lithology of the rocks and any important sedimentary structures and fossils. After this initial examination the core would be transported to the Geological Survey of Great Britain core store for more detailed examination. The resulting borehole logs are kept in the Survey archive and are still available today. From studies of the core it is possible to work out the stratigraphic sequence and by using indicator fossils or microfossils found in the core it would be possible to date the rock and correlate its geology with other areas as well as discover traces of hydrocarbons. |
