| Description: | Looking north-west at West Bretton I opencast site, 150 yd. N. 16 degrees E. Smithey Ridge. A site reinstated after opencast coal working. Land restoration was the final stage in the process of opencast coal working. It is a stage that had to be planned for from the beginning and one controlled by the legislation of the day. The field in the foreground has not been worked but beyond the trees, the next field has been reinstated as pastureland after the Barnsley Coal has been removed by opencast working. Early methods of land restoration caused problems for agricultural productivity. The top soil was usually thin, there was an absence of subsoil and there was no requirement for artificial drainage such as field drains. This resulted in restoration methods being reviewed in 1947 and in 1951. |
