| Description: | Viewpoint of Herefordshire Beacon. It is capped by an extensive earthwork and is composed of Malvernian rocks of Precambrian age. Looking south. The Malvernian rocks are separated from Uriconian lavas and tuffs which form the ground in the extreme left of the picture, in the distance, by a fault marked by a depression. The wooded slopes forming the lower ground to the right of the picture consist of Silurian rocks of the May Hill Sandstone and Woolhope Limestone groups, separated by a thrust from the Precambrian. The houses are situated very close to the thrust. The earthworks are an Iron Age hillfort covering up to 13 hectares. There is a double bank and ditch in between. It is traditionally where Caractacus, King of the Britons, made his last stand against the invading Romans in AD 50. |
