Description: | Huntly Castle, Aberdeenshire. The imposing south front of the 16th century Huntly Castle, built by the Gordons of Huntly, showing the Tower and the Palace. This is the third castle to have occupied the site, and was preceded by a 12th century motte and bailey and medieval tower house. The walls are rubble-built with gabbros from the Huntly Intrusion, and the oriels and inscribed frieze at the top storey, added in the early 17th century, are composed of Old Red Sandstone. |
