Description: | The Helmsdale Valley in the vicinity of Caen, Sutherland. The flood plain of the River Helmsdale with a series of river terraces and what was once thought to be part of a late-glacial raised beach. A close-up of the terraces seen in C01988. The flat top of the terrace broken up into a series of mounds at a height of nearly 80 ft. is clearly visible in the centre of the photograph. It was once thought to be a fragment of a late-glacial (late Devensian) marine raised beach that is common lower down the valley but is more likely to be a river terrace. The dwelling Caen is on the right. |
