Caption: Shore near Gartymore, 1.6 km. south-west of Helmsdale, Sutherland.
Description: The boulder beds consist of angular blocks and boulders varying in diameter from a few centimetres to the nearby 'fallen stack' which measures 34 m. x 27 m. x 9 m. and set in a sandy matrix that includes fossils of creatures that originally lived in shallow water or even a deltaic environment. They formed from accumulations of rock-fall breccias at the foot of a submarine escarpment along the line of the Helmsdale Fault. It is thought that the blocks slid relatively slowly down the scarp and mainly along gullies. The Jurassic Helmsdale Boulder Bed. Boulders of Middle Old Red Sandstone resting on shelly limestone and soft mudstone of Jurassic age. A geologist is seen reclining on one of the large boulders.
