Description: Stenness. Orkney Isles. The henge and stone circle of the Standing Stones of Stenness form part of a great ceremonial complex in the heart of Orkney. Four thin, unshaped flagstones now survive, the tallest over 5 m. high; it is thought that there were originally twelve stones set in a circle about 30 m. in diameter, surrounded by a ditch and bank, with an entrance causeway to the north. The Standing Stones of Stenness is one of the two most northerly circle-henges in the British Isles, the other being the Ring of Brodgar. These two monuments together with their associated stones and burial mounds form part of a very important prehistoric ceremonial complex.
