Description: Dalmeny Oil Works, Dalmeny. West Lothian. Tip heaps or 'bings' of spent oil-shale. Typically, each bing would be 30-40 m. high, flat-topped and with steep sides at the natural angle of rest. They are composed of the red burnt mudstone and siltstone fragments which are known locally as 'blaes' or 'red blaes', the waste product of the extraction of oil from the oil-shales.
