| Description: | Looking west at Dunstan Hill II opencast site, 1000 yards north 7 degrees west of Temple House Farm. General view of opencast coal site. On this site two seams are present separated by fireclay and shale. The dark band showing on the solid face is the Top Middleton Little Coal which has been recovered from the whole length of the cut. In the foreground a power shovel, helped by a dragline, is clearing the measures between the coals while at a lower level the Bottom Middleton Little Coal is being loaded for removal from the site. Near the top of the 60 ft. face one of the Brown Metal seams can be seen. Opencast coal working proceeds using a two or three bench method using face shovel excavators and draglines. Most of the work involves removing the overburden before exposing the coal seams for working. During the early 1940's when opencast started on a large scale the plant available was small, however, towards the end of the Second World War and beyond large excavators were brought in from the United States. |
